Frederick Delius was born in Germany. Originally destined to become a part of his family orange growing business, the young Delius was sent to Florida. It was Florida where Delius’s enormous musical talent was discovered. Delius’s family supported the young composer’s study at the Leipzig Conservatory, where Delius met Grieg, who became Delius’s friend and a very strong influence for many years. Delius was admired by Sir Thomas Beecham, who introduced Delius’s works to the British public. The musical characteristics of Delius’s compositions often offer intensive rhapsodic feeling.
